NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been barred from campaigning for the next three days for Model Code violation. Similar action was also taken against Mayawati – she was barred  from campaigning for the next two days. The action by the Election Commission came as the Supreme Court today pulled up the Commission, asking if it was aware of its powers to make errant political leaders fall in line.

In its order, the Commission said Yogi Adityanath can’t address any public meeting, campaigns or address the media for 72 hours from 6 am tomorrow. A similar bar is in place for Mayawati for 48 hours starting tomorrow.

Yogi Adityanath had come under severe opposition criticism for dragging the armed forces into politics after his “Modi ji ki sena” comment.”The Congress people used to serve terrorists biryani, but Modi ji’s Sena (Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s army) gives them only bullets and bombs,” he had said at a recent rally in Ghaziabad.Even Union Minister VK Singh had rebuked his party colleague, saying the “Army does not belong to any individual but to the entire nation”.
