Migratory birds killed in storm in Dhakuakhana

North Lakhimpur:7th October: Dozens of water fowl, including migratory birds were killed in Dhakuakhana following a storm that lashed the area last night.

The incident occured at Khajua Tiniali, on Dhakuakhana-Majuli road when a branch of a huge Shimaloo tree came down crashing in the storm. More than 50 birds like Asian Openbill Stork, Little Cormorant, Cattle Egret in adults and their juveniles were killed in that storm while many of them were injured.
Conservationist group Pure Environment for Wild Life rescued the injured birds and treated them with the help of local forest department .

According to Dhrubajyoti Chetia of Pure Environment for Wild Life, a stretch of woods of Shimaloo trees from Khajua Tiniali to Sri Sri Vasudev thaan had a seasonal habitat of local migratory birds like Asian Openbill Stork among those Shimaloo trees that have been felled for road widening works resulting in over crowding of the birds in this hatching season. He also informed a similar incident during the last week of September.
