In the run up to Dev Deepawali, Guru Purab and Bhagwan Birsa Munda’s 150th Jayanti, Delhi was today illuminated with 3.5 lakh diyas as the National Capital celebrated Dilli Deepotsav on the bank of river Yamuna at Vasudev Ghat near the Kashmere Gate – ISBT.

The function, a first of its kind, was organised by the Delhi Development Authority under the guidance of Hon’ble Lt Governor Delhi, Shri V K Saxena.  The event was attended by many dignitaries and Hon’ble Lt Governor Delhi was the chief guest. To further illuminate the spiritual landscape, Hon’ble Lt Governor also performed Yamuna Aarti on the occasion.

A captivating drone and laser show was also organised and a grand Ram Darbar was housed in the ‘Baradari’ at Vasudev Ghat. The diyas were lit at the Ghat by people from various walks of life attending the event, which include students and artists.

Speaking at the occasion, Hon’ble Lt Governor said that Yamuna is the identity of people of Delhi. It is our responsibility to keep it clean. I would like to state that the place where we are sitting here was full of garbage two years back and now today we are celebrating Deepotsav. It has happened because we were committed towards reviving the area. The objective of the deepotsav is to make our contribution to the cleanliness of Yamuna. I would like that in future Dilli Deepotsav to be popular like Deepotsav of Ayodhya and I expect 5 lakh diyas to be illuminated next year and it should further continue to increase in the coming years.

In line with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision to conserve environment and ecology for the people, Hon’ble Lt. Governor Delhi inaugurated Vasudev Ghat project in March 2024, another milestone to restore and rejuvenate the floodplains of river Yamuna.

Vasudev Ghat is the first Ghat restored in Delhi by DDA. Spreading over an area of 16 ha, the main Ghat stretches to a length of 145 m and has 25 steps to the holy water of Yamuna. The 5 hectare green on the Ghat is laid in Charbagh style.

In consonance with the historic Mughal gardens, it has a Baradari and numerous Chhatris dotting the precinct.

Many special attractions adorn the site including a statue of Maa Yamuna amidst beautifully carved pavilions and lush greens with flower beds that are sown thematically every season with species like tulips, marigold, sadabahar etc.

DDA has also entered into an arrangement that entails organising “Yamuna Aarti” at Vasudev Ghat twice a week (Sunday and Tuesday). The Aarti is not only about our paying respect to the mighty river but also to bring about consciousness and a sense of responsibility in the people towards the Yamuna thus aiding in preventing further pollution and in becoming a major stakeholder in the efforts to clean the river.

The Ghat features landscaped gardens, kuccha walking paths and cultural spaces, making it a perfect destination as an open public green that are being developed all across the city by DDA under the guidance of Hon’ble Lt Governor.
