Water Resources Minister inspects flood affected areas in Dibrugarh ‎

Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika inspected erosion-affected areas at Maijan-Mathola in ‎Dibrugarh on Thursday. ‎

He was accompanied by Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan, Lahowal MLA Binod Hazarika and ‎Assam Tourism Development Corporation Chairman Rituparna Baruah.‎

During his inspection Hazarika said the state government has taken various steps to combat the ‎flood and erosion problem in Dibrugarh district. ‎

He mentioned that several projects are going on in the district.‎

‎”We are continuously working towards making Dibrugarh flood-free and have already taken ‎several steps in this direction. To prevent floods, the construction of water bodies has been ‎planned. Today visited a site for the development of these water bodies in the district,” Hazarika ‎said.‎

The great earthquake of August 15, 1950 measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale had altered the ‎course of the Brahmaputra and lifted the bed level of the rover in Dibrugarh by several metres. ‎As a result, the Brahmaputra bed now lies several feet higher than the ground level of Dibrugarh ‎town. Most of the time, the Brahmaputra flows much higher than the ground level
