New Delhi, November 27, 2024: The Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development (CESD), SIST, Jamia Hamdard, organized a thought-provoking lecture on “Climate Change and Green Transition: Global Impact on Natural Disasters and their Management” on 25th November 2024. The event was part of CESD’s ongoing initiatives to promote awareness and action on critical environmental issues.
Professor (Dr.) M. Z. Abdin, Director of CESD, delivered the welcome address and introductory remarks, setting the stage for the session. He emphasized the urgency of transitioning to green energy and sustainable practices to mitigate the escalating risks posed by climate change. Dr. Abdin highlighted CESD’s commitment to fostering informed dialogue on environmental sustainability.
Dr. Parvez Hayat, a distinguished IPS officer, academician, and disaster management expert, delivered the keynote lecture. Dr. Hayat provided a comprehensive analysis of the global climate crisis, focusing on the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters due to climate change. He delved into the importance of adopting green technologies and policy frameworks to build resilient communities. Dr. Hayat also shared insights from his research and international engagements, emphasizing the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced data analytics in disaster prediction and management. He cited real-world examples of how AI-driven tools are being used to enhance early warning systems and streamline urban planning to withstand environmental challenges.
Prof. (Dr.) M. Afshar Alam, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, in his presidential remarks, lauded the efforts of CESD in addressing vital environmental issues. He reflected on the need for collective action at both institutional and community levels to combat climate change. The Vice Chancellor urged students and researchers to focus on innovative solutions and interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability, reaffirming Jamia Hamdard’s dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. M. Iqbal R. Khan, Deputy Director of CESD, who acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the speaker, organizers, and attendees. The event was convened by Dr. Monica Saifi and co-convened by Dr. Javed Ahmad.
